TNLA Accused of Protecting Myanmar Junta Troops in Mongmit

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) has been accused of protecting Myanmar junta troops in Mongmit from attack by Kachin Independence Army (KIA)-led forces after returning control of the northern Shan town to the regime.

The TNLA returned Mongmit and the neighboring ruby-mining hub of Mogoke in Mandalay Region under a China-brokered ceasefire agreement, escorting junta convoys into both towns on Saturday.

A local source told The Irrawaddy that the TNLA has deployed a large force near Myit Sone village on the road south from Mabein to Mongmit, blocking the KIA and allied forces from advancing toward Mongmit.

Mabein town was seized by the KIA and allied People’s Defense Force (PDF) groups under the civilian National Unity Government in January last year.

The TNLA has also posted 100 troops on the Mongmit-Mantong road, preventing a resistance advance from the east.

Meanwhile, the regime has deployed 120mm howitzers on Mongmit’s football pitch and is digging trenches to defend the town, the source said. Most residents fled ahead of the junta takeover.

The TNLA has opened a liaison office in Mongmit and is reportedly sharing intelligence with the junta on the movements of resistance groups outside the town, the local source said.

The Irrawaddy was unable to independently verify this allegation. TNLA General Secretary Major General Tar Phone Kyaw could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

He added that the KIA and allied groups had originally intended to enter Mongmit once the TNLA had left or to fight the junta occupiers, but that plan fell through when the TNLA aided the regime’s takeover.

The SNA aligned with junta forces to fight resistance groups in upper Sagaing Region and neighboring Kachin State after the 2021 military coup.

Chinese officials warned KIA leaders not to disrupt the Beijing-brokered handover of Mongmit during a meeting in Kunming last month.

However, the KIA has since told The Irrawaddy and other media outlets that it will continue to support PDFs fighting the regime in Mongmit. Its spokesperson couldn’t be reached for comment on Thursday.

Mogoke and Mongmit were seized by TNLA-led resistance forces in July last year during Operation 1027, a joint offensive with the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and Arakan Army. The TNLA captured 12 towns over the course of the operation.
